However, the capital input required to invest in commercial battery cage systems is massive and unreachable to most small-scale farmers. Besides the steep cost materials often used to make the cages are not consistent enough to raise the heavy and strong local (Kienyeji) breeds. Under the weight of such breeds and even the exotic breeds, the cages would sag in no time, would become highly unstable and the risk of the system failing and crashing, resulting in losses to the farmer, can never be underscored.
It is for this reason that we came up with an improved, but more affordable battery cage system made out of locally available materials meant to hold all breeds of chicken for the long haul. Unlike the commercial cage systems, our design revolves around efficiency and effectiveness thus using much less materials. Effectively, the cost of the system is reduced by half the cost of commercial cages.
Farm hygiene is our principle foundation around which our system is designed. Thus, we aimed to ensure that the chicken house is dry at all times. With the chicken drinkers where approximately 30% of the water would be spilled, our design makes sure that this water neither reaches the feeds nor the chicken house floor. A dry feeder tray and floor controls an outbreak of fungi and coccidiosis among many other microorganisms that thrive in dirty and damp chicken runs and houses.
